J.M. Field Marketing Walks for a Cause
On a sunny spring day, ten J.M. Field Marketing employees and friends came together to participate in the Florida 10K AIDS Walk 2011. The walk, which started and ended at the Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale, was organized by AIDS Healthcare Foundation to raise awareness about and help reverse the continuing epidemic of HIV/AIDS in South Florida.
Since JMF is always willing to support a good cause, the idea to support the Florida AIDS Walk was an easy one.
The JMF team had tie-dye shirts printed up for the walk and the company donated a large sum of money to the Florida AIDS Walk. Everyone gathered at Huizenga Plaza at 9:20 for the opening ceremony, since the team leader Bianca Sorraco had checked us in earlier in the week and collected the team sign. Although there was music and several speeches to get everyone excited for the walk, the crowd was already energized and pumped. The 2-hour Florida AIDS Walk consisted of a path through the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach and back to Huizenga Plaza. The walk started off slow and gradually everyone eased into a comfortable pace as walkers traded their team signs amongst each other and blasted music to keep themselves in the mood. Throughout the walk zone there were signs posted to indicate each mile, refreshments set up at several check points, volunteers to cheer on the walkers, portable bathrooms and relief shuttles for individuals who needed assistance.
JMF was glad that each member of the team made it to the finish line and no one quit during the long walk. We each had our own reasons for participating in the walk, but one reason everyone shared was the need to help spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and that an increase in the number of HIV prevention and testing efforts in Florida’s Broward and Miami Dade counties was needed. The AIDS Walk was a huge success with a total of $640,000 (surpassing the initial goal of $500,000) raised for non-profits such as AIDS Healthcare Foundation who provide lifesaving care and other services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. In additions, funds raised will go toward the expansion of HIV prevention and testing efforts in Broward and Miami Dade counties.
