Google Now Ranks Tweets

Recently, Google started displaying the latest real-time results in addition to the top 10 results on their search results page.  These real-time results are meant to offer searchers the latest news about the topic they’re searching for. Most of Google’s real-time results are actually tweets from Twitter users.

Amit Singhal who led the creation and development of Google’s real-time search explained that there are some kinds of PageRank just for tweets. The real-time results on the search results page is determined by the amount of followers that follow a particular user and the relevancy of their comment.

The more followers a Twitter user has, then the more trustworthy Google considers that Twitter page and the comments made by the user. If a popular Twitter user follows another Twitter user, then this user will have a larger impact on the reputation of that user.

Google real-time search uses filters as well as algorithms such as:

  • Hashtags
  • Spam
  • Signals in the Noise

This means that Twitter users, who utilize “hashtags” in their comments when discussing popular subjects, will sometimes have their tweet show up in the real-time results.  For instance, a hashtag is written # followed by the subject name ( # Earthquake in Haiti). Although hashtags can also be used to spam users, the wrong hashtag can activate Google’s spam filters.

Google algorithms also look for the signals in the noise. To find the pertinent tweets related to a specific topic, Google also searches for other words close to the topic. For instance, when  “Massachusetts election”  is searched for other relevant terms such as Martha Coakley will probably also be searched as well. Since only the latest real-time results are shown, they only last until other new and relevant results are found. So the time and effort it takes to get your real-time result listed produces little result. Plus, the real-time results last only a few minutes, probably less. Why not let us boost your regular result rankings.
