It looks as if California is about to become the first state to ban the use of plastic and paper bags at grocery, convenience, and other stores. This ban aims to reduce the number of disposable plastic bags that end up in urban rivers and the ocean, as well as to cut down on the number of bags heading for landfills. If the California State Senate approves the ban, shoppers will have to bring their own reusable tote bags, or pay 5 cents for a recycled plastic bag. Experts estimate that it takes 20-1000 years for one plastic bag to decompose?
Since Californians already uses up to 19 billion plastic bags per year, this would reduce the number of bags each person uses and put the $25 million dollars spend to collect and bury these bags to other use.
For California shoppers, it looks like there will finally be an incentive to stop leaving their reusable bags at home. The United Nations has called for the bans to go global. Already San Francisco, Washington D.C. and several other cities ban plastic bags.
On the bright side – this would reduce the environmental impact of plastic and paper bags and companies can give away free tote and grocery bags to customers who will appreciate not having to buy their own reusable bags. Your company logo will receive loads of exposure. Think about it. So will it be your logo or your competitors on those bags?
